Comprehensive Exam

If it is determined that a more thorough dental workup is needed for your case, an appointment with Dr. Edward Nelson or Dr. Andrew Nelson will be arranged for a comprehensive exam.
 
This appointment will begin with a thorough review of your medical history to determine if any precautions must be taken for dental treatment* (see below).  This will be followed by a head, neck, and intra-oral examination.  We are strong believers that a dentist is not just a "tooth carpenter."  The teeth are just one component of a complex maxillofacial region that includes various muscles, joints, bony structures, and tissue types, all of which work together to help you function properly and comfortably. 
 
Also included in this visit (and every visit after that) is an Oral Cancer Screening, where we examine all the tissue throughout the head and neck for anything that may be out of the ordinary (to learn more about Oral Cancer and the importance of regular screening please click here).
 
Last, but not least, we will examine all your teeth visually and through a series of x-rays.  Depending on when and what type of x-rays were taken previously, we will recommend what x-rays are deemed necessary for you.  We will also check your gums for any signs of periodontal disease.  Once we compile all of this information we will go through your case and have a consultation explaining your diagnosis and present to you your various treatment options. Finally, once you have decided which treatment suits your needs both dentally and financially, we will schedule appointments to begin treatment.    
 
Occasionally, treatment can be done the same day as the consultation. However, a complex medical history or treatment plan will require a second appointment to provide treatment on another day.
 
*** Certain medical conditions or previous surgeries may require Antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental treatment.  Examples include prosthetic joints (hip/knee replacements, heart conditions, etc.)  Please inform us prior to your appointment if you have previously taken Antibiotic prophylaxis prior to dental treatment or you feel yo may be a candidate.
